As a general rule fiberglass will bend and deflect way before it breaks. 
Fiberglass normally doesn't fail in tension, but in compression and in this 
case it would be controlled by the diameter to thickness ratio. Your concern 
with using fiberglass will not be strength as much a can you stand the 
deflection. Remember that that make fishing poles out of fiberglass.
