Hi Larry,
I helped rebuild one of these for a good friend and his TA-33 was the same 
way. The color coding consisted of a single stroke mark with a colored 
marker. His instructions had a conflict just like your manual. We ended up 
following the exploded view drawing and matching up the turns on the coils. 
The color codes went in the opposite direction that the manual specified and 
it tuned up fine.
We also had to refresh the contact between the coils and the binding screws 
on the coil ends (aluminum on aluminum....) inside the trap itself before 
getting satisfactory results.
Another good application for antioxidant!
