There are heat-indicating sticks, similar to crayons, available in many
temperature ranges.  You just make a small mark where you want the
temperature measured and then look for color changes.  Sorry, I don't
remember the manufacturer, but any industrial/electrical supply house should
be able to find them for you.  They are available in sets of various
temperature ranges and are quite accurate.  I used them in the avionics
field for years.
