When you consider you're relying on the precise design of the grip, plus
adhesive and abrasive to hold against 4000+ lb of tension, I think I'd
rather rely on the manufacturer's guidance.  The whole idea is a little
like black magic, and I'd rather ask the magician! 

However, it is neither necessary to pay Rohn prices or to buy 50 of the
right grips.  I just got a few from Texas Towers (onesie prices) for well
under the Rohn price.
