One of the discussions a week or two ago was about towers near
airports. It does appear possible to get permission to put big towers
pretty close... It may not work for an Amateur Radio tower (but should...)
as readily as a government/commercial one but this is an interesting story!

The key section of the story:
"The board of selectmen [in Windsor Locks CT] learned Tuesday night that a
150-foot communications tower erected near the town police and fire complex
is to be extended to 200 feet.
The Federal Aviation Administration has granted permission for the extension.
Because the tower stands less than 2 miles from Bradley International
Airport, Message Center Management, the Hartford communications company
that built it, kept the original tower shorter than it wanted.
It then applied to the federal agency, which scrutinized the potential
effect of a taller structure on inbound, outbound and passing flight. Its
decision, which becomes final today, is that the tower will have "no
substantial adverse effect on the safe and efficient Utilization of the
navigable airspace."
The tower supports communications antennas for town police, fire and civil
preparedness agencies at no charge because it was built on town
property. It also supports antennas for commercial customers of Message
Center Management.
The town receives about 40 percent of the revenue from the rental of space
on the communications tower.
Raising the tower 50 feet will necessitate an adjustment of the flight path
used by inbound planes relying on instruments rather than sight to find
Runway 33, the second-longest runway at Bradley. "However, the impact
would be minimal," the FAA report says."
