I have noticed the same thing with Penatrox that it
get hardens a little over the years but is easily
cleaned with solvent. Have never seen any hint of
corrosion on a Penatrox joint in 25+ years. I stopped
using steel wool and now use Scotch-Brite pads. I
think they work better and you don't get little pieces
of the steel wool all over. The Scotch-Brite pads
come in various textures (course, medium, fine) so
they cover the same range of textures as steel wool.
