Darwinian "cleansing" of the gene pool would only apply if the unfortunate
climbers had yet to
produce viable offspring (e.g. junior tower climbers). Perhaps these poor
chaps were better at
finding mates and making babies than they were at building towers.
Also, natural selection isn't always as discriminating as some give it
credit - sometimes Darwin
bestows his award on the undeserving - e.g. future Nobel laureate run over
by drunk driver.
Perhaps this accident was due to something other than pilot error (i.e.
defective structural
material).
