I read the report of the tower accident and was saddened.
I read the responses to the report and was troubled by the total
lack of respect for the loss of human life.
I don't care if they were CBer's or lawyers. They were erecting a
tower and an accident occurred and lives were lost. This is a
sad thing.
They may have made some mistakes or something unforeseen may
have happened. But I will guarantee you, they did not set out
kill themselves intentionally.
I have climbed towers and done work, and had things not go as planned. Fortunately, I have not had anything this drastic go wrong. I hope I never do, but climbing is dangerous, and even professionals have been killed on the job.
It is important that we understand what went wrong so we can all learn from it.
And more importantly, so we can all teach from it. Anyone
erecting towers needs the full support of everyone who has,
is currently constucting, or is dreaming of erecting a tower.
I don't care if they are hams, CBers, VHF/UHF, or just small
business trying to put up a two radio tower, if they get hurt
or killed, it makes us all look bad.
It could be that someone in the local government will look at this or a similar situation and determine that only
professionals should erect towers. This will really hurt all of us.
So instead of being so smug, maybe we should make sure all
tower builders do things safely, instead of ridiculing their
tragic, and not so tragic mishaps.
