You can look at it as a pyramid built out of the layers. The more gain
(fractions of dB) the lower and wider the "layers" of pyramid can be worked.
If you picture KC1XX as the top, and Gino with bedsprings as antenna as the
bottom layer, every dB gets you another layer (bigger) of little guys. That's
what wins the contest - how many guys one can work, that others can't even
hear. Stacked Razors used to give me about 1 hour over excellent W2PV setup,
it was something to hear Euros calling them and they did not respond, just
kept CQing.
Some dBs are easier to come by eliminating some losses or problem areas
(rotten coax, matching gadgets, tuners, connectors, switches, long feedlines,
S/N and noise dicrimination, etc) rather than adding elements. I will take
any fraction of dB, especially if there are more of them. Some times you need
just 5 QSOs to win.
