Actually, I think that slope is too rigid. As both a driver of the
planes and a ham, I seem to remember differently. Need to check this one
out. Also, there is a horizontal separation also. For example here in
Atlanta, with the primary runways east west, if you lived a certain
distance south or north of the runway, the slope does not apply. This
horizontal separation is shaped like a pie slice, with the tip of the
pie touching the end of the runway.

However, there is another exception. Any natural environment ( read tree
)
which is equal to or higher than the tower negates the need to comply
with the rule. And the tree does NOT have to belong to you. It could be
on a neighbor's lot 500' away. One last thing, and of course it a no
boner for airports like Atlanta, O'Hare, ect., but if the runway in
question does NOT
have an approved approach procedure which allows descent to less than
300', the rules are off also.

So, go fertilize that big pine.
