Some empirical data. I run a long yagi. A friend of mine 8 miles away has a
pair of stacked 5's. I find that when we're aimed at the same station we
will hear about as well. But he can detect stations farther off to the side
than I can. During VHF contests I've heard him come back to stations that I
couldn't hear because my beam is sharper horizontally that his array. On the
other hand, I can aim closer to mountaintop kilowatters than he can before
being bothered. I do a bit better on aurora but that's probably not one of
your concerns; He does a bit better on scatter. The rest of our equip is
about the same.
