Pete,

Yeah, that oxide on stranded wire is impossible. Only solution I ever
came up with was for the ends where I could unwind the strands and
clean each.  Tedious and not really a good solution.

K3LR swears by the split nuts.  He used them to tune most of his wire
antennas--including the 80 meter quad they had up for a while.  If you
are worried about them pulling out, use 2 or 3.
