I vaguely remember from High School chemistry that cupric and cuprous oxide
are chemically different, one black and one green.  The black oxide is
tenacious as heck, while the green comes off pretty easily.  If the black
is conductivem then good deal.

Summary for the list -- a number of people cautioned me about possible
rectification effects with unsoldered connections, while others, reportedly
including serious multi-multi and single op contesters, reported using
split nuts alone on copper antenna wires with no difficulty, as long as
properly tightened..
