Hello Barry,
I find that 500 to 600 ft works VERY WELL on 
80 and 40M.  Longer is better on 160 but WORSE
on 80 and 40.
I have 500 footers at 30 and 60 degress plus 150/330 deg,
and 800 footers at 45 and 85 degrees.  There are times
when each is better than the rest.
