Hi all, well we did some modeling of 4sqrs using EZNEC. The model showed that
both the regular ground mounted 4sqr and a K8UR 4sqr top at 150 ft are very
sensitive to far field ground conditions. I guess that's why everyone likes
verticals on a salt water beach along with the nice weather. The regular 4sqr
has a sharper pattern and better fb (24db) than the K8UR 4sqr. The main lobe of
the regular 4sqr has a gain of 8.4dbi at 15 deg with a good ground. The K8UR
4sqr has a main lobe of 8.6dbi at 10deg and a fb of 16db and in this model the
tower adds about 1db to the main lobe. The K8UR 4sqr also has a high angle lobe
7.5 db down of the main lobe at 75 deg. Both 4sqrs lose about 3db and main lobe
rises a few degrees over poor ground. For a comparison I modeled an inverted V
at 150 ft. It had a lobe of 7.6dbi at 30 deg over good ground and a lobe of
7dbi over poor ground. In conclusion the regular 4sqr works better on receive
(sharper pattern) and most people I talked to use this 4sqr for their receive
and transmit antenna. BTW I modeled a 4sqr using slopes and it came up as a
terrible antenna with poor pattern and gain. Hope this helps.
