Bill:

In Texas, we shoot them critters!  Seriously, your problem can be solved by 
slipping each of the ropes through a 8-10 ft. length of light duty PVC pipe. 
The PVC pipe serves 3 purposes:

1. The white (or gray) PVC pipe is easier to see for mowing around, etc.

2. Your rope is protected in that area.

3. Gives the critters indigestion!
