Hi Bob,
I would probably try to remove each side of the driven element and take it
to the ground for work. Never having done it, I can only say that I would
attempt to use a dremel tool to cut the caps off and leave the coil intact.
Then use some coax, maybe about 5 ft or so per trap (30pf per foot ? I
think.) Make pigtails on one end to attach to the screws on each side of the
coil and then trim to resonance. You could just let them hang, but maybe
someone will know if you can wrap the loose end around the coil without
affecting it. Use RG-213 and seal everything for weather. I think it was
Tom N4KG that suggested I try this on mine to bring the 10m portion where I
need it. A lot of work, but easier than manhandling that 85lb antenna. If
it works for you, be sure to let us know and thank Tom for the idea. Five
feet might not be enough, but I have what I think is 50 to 60 pf caps in my
traps with two or three in a trap. You could also replace the ceramic
transmitting caps. There is also a fellow in New York City that had a set
of elements with traps, but shipping seemed to be a problem and I would have
to scrounge my printed email stack to find it. The other thing is, if your
ever near the Midwest, maybe I can be talked out of mine.:)
Good Luck
