[TowerTalk] static busters, an easy solution

Greetings-
I was just reading an ad in summer 2000 HRO catalog and I think I found a
solution to static-, or at least MFJ did-
On page 75, under noise filters, there is an ad for the MFJ 1026. Un-edited,
it reads in full:
"MFJ-1026 wipes out interference on all modes SSB, AM, CW, FM and frequencies
from 1.5 to 30 MHz. Wipes out lighting crashes, severe power line noise from
arcing transformers, lamp dimmers, touch control lamps, electric drills,
motors, industrial processes, etc. Dig out weak stations, eliminate unwanted
signals. Better than a phased antenna. Connects between transciever and
transmitting antenna. RF sense T/R switch bypasses transciever when you
transmit. Adjustable delay time. Uses 12VDC or 110 VAC with MFJ-1231B
($12.95). HRO price $169.95"
Notice the ads uses a number of absolute descriptive adjectives, such as,
"wipes out static crashes", eliminate unwanted signals", "better than a
phased antenna".
This is some piece of equipment-
What a price too. Imagine, operate on 160 meters throughout the summer, get
rid of all that QRM in the next CQWW contest, and who needs a large lot for
an array????
For $169.95, this sure seems like a bargin! I just don't understand why no
one has brought it to the antention on towertalk.
I personally use beverage antennas in heavy static QRN, then, I turn up my AF
control until the meter creeps up and the signal sometimes become more
readable, with the AGC set on fast, filters set on narrow, and the rig's
attentuation brought up in efforts to dig the signal out- I have never found
DSP to work well at all vs. these steps- But if gradually increasing these
items doesn't help, then I can always plug in my MFJ-1026-
I have a few friends who use it, and some like it better than others- but as
far as all the absolutes, I just can't find one person who will back up that
it "wipes out static crashes" and if it did, what is left of the signal you
are trying to hear- it does sort of defy common sense- but if it works as
stated in the ad, please let us know!
This could be a fantastic find! I'm giddy! hi
