When I first encountered the 'blackened shield' in coax, I tried a lot of
things to get the material to accept solder easily.  Nothing worked.  If I
cant cut back the coax to where the shield is clean, I trash it and put in
new coax.  It's just not worth the hassle.

There were a few times I could wirebrush the strands and it would take
solder, but I never got smooth coverage over the strands.

It also seemed to me that the 'blackened strands' were more brittle than
clean strands.
