The flamethrower was originally at the station of Bob Mitchell, N5RM
(SK) in Greenville, Texas on a 40 acre site. It was a beefed up Wilson
full size 3 element job. He collaborated with Dick Weber, K5IU (
Rotating Tower Systems)in building and installing it. I believe Dick did
the mechanical design on the beam and installed it. They also put up the
4 stack TH7 on one of Dicks rotating towers. I believe it was called the
TH28 and was featured in CQ also.
Bob put together an impressive low band system consisting of a central
200 ft tower supporting a number of tilted vee beams. I believe there
were 15 or 20 wires evenly spaced around the tower. Each wire came to a
wood pole about 10 ft high with a terminating resistor to ground. The
wires were quite long (don't remember the length). Adjacent wires could
be selected in any compass direction. It seemed like a killer low band
antenna but Bob told me that it was not. He said there was a large
vertical component in the output and a radial system would help its
performance. As far as I know, he never put in the radials.
Bob was a teriffic CW operator. He was a senior executive for E
Systems and traveled frequently to military installations around the
world, including some of the rarer Pacific islands. He frequently
operated from those locations.
