[Towertalk] Prosistel Rotors

I believe we are witnessing the advantage of a well designed gear train
doing the job of pointing an antenna...

At the heart of the Big Boys and a few others like the Creates is a drive
train using a worm gear drive...I only lasted a year in engineering school
but a good friend, W1RAN, pointed out to me the beauty of the worm gear -
turning the worm will move the mating gear.....turning the gear qwill NOT
make the worm move...this is the reason they do not need electro-mechanical
brakes like say a Ham-#

I still agree with Dave Leason - it is ridiculous what we as hams pay for
rotors which are much simpler than say a washing machine but way more
expensive!

I cannot imagine a better drive train than a worm gear - now for someone to
invent a directional indicator which does deteriorate over time - pots,
selsyns and especially digital controllers are all to prone to QFU....

Pair up a fool proof indicator with a worm gear and start production...I bet
they will beat a path to your door!

turned a Tribander and bunch of VHF antennas, the other a 30 foot boom 6
meter beam and more VHF/UHF antennas. The Ham V's would last on the average
a year before they became toast and would also stall in some of the winds
we'd get (the joys of the hilltop). Prosistels never stall and have been
going fine for 2 1/2 years so far.
