"Dip It" tarnish remover, available in most supermarkets, does a pretty good
job, too.  If you have room to "wipe" the copper, "Twinkle" copper cleaner,
applied with a damp sponge, works very well with just a swipe, although it
should be rinsed off with clear water.  Problem, of course, is that no
matter what you do, short of applying a protective coating as a second
operation, copper will only tarnish again.  Just ask the Statue of

Hydrochloric acid will clean copper very nicely. It is available from pool
supply stores as Muratic acid (Muratic acid is just diluted Hydrochloric
acid). It can be nasty stuff though, so don't get it on your clothes, skin,
small mammals (oops... that was earlier in the thread...), etc.
