And, to extend a bit, the phased array of flag pole verticals.  You are 
potentially cursed, though, but the ground characteristics in the "near 
field" having a huge effect on the underlying performance.

When you start putting the antenna up in the air, it helps a bunch, because 
not as much of the reactive field around the antenna is in a lossy medium.

Perhaps you could sow your yard (and your neighbors') with salt?  All in a 
good cause, of course.
