I've done this same sort of trick, but I used copper wire, not steel.

My thinking is the last thing I want is to have a redox reaction cut 
through my radial wire. Having steel in direct contact with copper is 
going to cause corrosion of the copper wire.

Put 12 radials down about a  year ago. I can't even FIND them under the 
grass any more....
