I totally agree that using something huskier is an excellent idea -- in a "short" tower like 40, 50 or 60' you end up with something really stout.

I've been advising (giving opinions and observations, nothing absolute) KB3KAQ, who I think started this thread with his question, and I think, as with most guys putting up their first tower, cost is a factor.  The elusive on-the-ground ready to go $25-per-section used Rohn 25 (or sometimes better yet, it's yours free if you'll come take it down) is attractive versus Rohn 55 at $200 a section (?) used, when you can find it, which usually you can't or what, $300 new if that can be found in Rohn's current situation.

Bill, I think you or someone may have recently mentioned some used 55, but I assume it'd be at the normal used prices and Florida is a long way from Maryland to go pick up a few sections of tower.

As I often say, "Hey, all it takes is money!"  I've always been "impressed" with the relatively high cost of crankups, for instance.  You can get a really nice one of those for, say, $15,000.  For that money you might get 90' of it.  The guys to whom money is no object, who can just go buy retail whatever tower they want and have it installed, may also be living on more acreage where setbacks and height limits aren't much of a problem either.  hi.

I'm sorry for that "riff."  KB3KAQ, I think, is looking for something economical which is why he's going with a type of tower at the smaller end of the spectrum.

  Unless you have the Rohn 25 in stock, I would recommend using stouter stuff 
  like Rohn 55 which would allow you to get up to 60 feet with the bracketing at 
  28 feet.  This stuff is easily erected in one piece by a small crane if the 
  job of raising it by gin pole looks like a big chore.
