WD-40 is quite similar to kerosene.  It will actually
dissolve lubricants.
This is why it is popular in the typical garage where items
need to be
degreased and cleaned before relubricating.>>

Actually if you are careful with WD40 it will soften up old
dryed out hard grease and the grease will remain that way
for years.

It also leaves a very light coating that is a lubricant and
corrosion inhibiter, but shouldn't be consider to replace a
proper lube.

All that said, it works very well to restore poor wiping
type contacts if they switch without current or voltage
applied.  It also is great for loosening up things that are
corroded or have dried grease. Just don't wash away all the
old grease unless you plan on relubing it.
