It seems like the last thing you'd want to do, doesn't it?  But simply put, 
you want your entire ground circuit to "bounce", or rise as simultaneously 
as possible during a strike event. The object is to not leave one piece of 
equipment at a lower ground potential than the rest. Avoid parallel paths to 
ground. If you tie your shack, tower and input panel together. Then connect 
that to your utility ground, you can greatly minimize parallel paths.  Don't 
forget to protect your utility's service entrance too.
