[TowerTalk] Urban Contesting

While I also rely on friends in the country for contesting, I use a variety
of antennas at my meager suburban lot. I use a Gap Titan for 10-40M, and
wire vertical with capacitance hat for 80M contesting. I use a meager 5
element beam for 6M. I also use a modest AL-80 amplifier when I want to go
QRO. I am planning a 2 element phased array on 80M to help with my signal.
For local contests, such as ARRL SS, I use an 80M loop that is tossed up in
a bunch of trees about 30 feet in the air. A tuner allows use on all bands.
All this is approximately the same lot size. In addition, my soil is
typical PA - all rock.

I will never be in the top ten of the CQWW. My only hope is to beat my
previous score, or to make a few simple wagers with the local hams for
cigars, beers or whatever..... I have fun at that - and don't worry about
the other people. Contesting can be done - you just have to have reasonable
expectations.

The operators that come from the city up here have found that the best
antennas for urban contesters belong to friends in the country.
