HI, Doug;

Perhaps a freestanding tower will survive better among trees than a 
guyed tower.  The trees will shelter it a bit from lower level wind, and 
trimming or removing only the trees that threaten to hit it directly may 
be less disruptive than trimming or removing every tree that might hit a 
guy.
