Actually if you run the numbers using the equation from the ARRL antenna handbook you will find that using open wire feeders your efficiency will be pretty damn good at HF. If it was not for the fact that the solid state rigs blow their corks under high VSWR conditions you could connect directly to the open wire feeder and run 80% efficiency.

Open wire feeders have losses well below any coax made to date and that accounts for the reason you can stuff 50 wastts into it and radiate 40 watts easily. So you lose 10 watts. You would have to knock yourself down to 12.5 watts radiated before being able to see "1 S Unit difference".
