RFI may be a problem with or w/o shielded cable.  EMP from summer lightning
may be a much more expensive problem. Many if not most of the devices that
connect with CAT 5 do not have surge protection. If it is a long run of CAT5
outside you will want to invest in surge protection at both ends.
