When I was about 18 years old, I made 100' of ladderline 
using #14 hard-drawn copper wire and those little 2" ceramic 
insulators made by E.F. Johnson. I had a hell of a time 
getting the wire through all the tiny holes in those 
insulators. It took hours. I got it done, though, and was 
really proud of my work until K1LPL (now W3LPL) came over 
and looked at my handiwork. His comment was "Why did you go 
to all that trouble? The #14 wire is supposed to lie in the 
OUTSIDE NOTCHES of the insulators, and just little tie wires 
go through the holes!" That was an ego-deflating moment for 
sure.

I have since made open wire line using pieces of plastic 
coathangars. You can get about 6 spacers per coathangar. 
Holes and notches can be made with a drill press. To make a 
notch, first drill a hole and then cut the hole in half.
