Great story and it's just as relevant today: I found a large stash of the 
same Johnson ceramic insulators and was a bit perplexed as to why they had 
notches on the outside.  I was about to route the wiring through the 
insulator's holes and then had a thought that I might want to research it a 
bit more.  I found the answer in a 1940s edition of the ARRL Handbook where 
attachment instructions were provided.

There's still quite a bit of work involved since two tie wires are used and 
a total of four 'quasi' Western-Union (WU) style splices must be made per 
insulator.  For a 100-ft line with 18-inch insulator spacing, that's roughly 
260 WU style wraps!
