[TowerTalk] Soldering Iron

My Weller 100/260 Watt soldering gun works fine for soldering PL 259's inside or outside.

However, I have found that the connections between the soldering gun tip holders and the tip gets corroded and the nuts that attach the tip to the iron often need to be tightened befor the gun is used --- otherwise, the PL -259 heats very slowly. I can tell when I pull the trigger whether the tip needs to be tightened by the vibration and sound that the gun makes.

It is also helpful to apply a little solder between the tip and the PL-259 to improve the heat transfer.

FYI,

The tip is .250 dia solid copper that we filed to chisel tip. It was handy because I just used it to install some PL-259 connectors (AMPHENOL 83-1SP). > > > > Current American Beauty site shows has 3114 listing but lower wattage, same .25 dia tips. > > > > Arne N7KA > > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Rob Atkinson" <ranchorobbo at gmail.com> > To: towertalk at contesting.com > Sent: Monday, February 2, 2009 8:37:39 PM GMT +00:00 Casablanca / Monrovia > Subject: Re: [TowerTalk] Soldering Iron > > A gun no matter how high watt isn't any good because the tip doesn't > have the metal mass needed for soldering a uhf male outside.
