I remember a conversation with W1FB years ago and he found that 16 50'
radials was a very good start for most vertical antenna systems. I have
tried (briefly) to find the information in QST without luck as I am pretty
sure he published the data.

In addition, almost any article by Sevick would be helpful as well as
