[TowerTalk] Hot Dip Galvanizing

I was just figured I would just do one at a time, that way it was all in
alignment. I actually have a new one of these but am using it at another
place we have. Got this for cheap so I dont mind putting some effort and
cash in it. Sure beats the price of new!

I would be more concerned about keeping everything in alignment as it was
reassembled.
The factory must be using a jig to hold the parts together as they assemble
it.
Sounds to me like it would be better to buy new tower sections.
It might cost a little more but you wouldnt get bogged down for months
trying and hopefully succeeding in re-assembling the thing.

This is indeed a BX and yep, they are aluminum. A lot of the rivets are
corroded and I had a quick though when I started on it to replace the ones
that were corroded but figured it wouldn't be worth the effort. Replacing
with nuts and bolts would be easy but how difficult would it be to replace
them with steel rivets?

A 48ft ROHN BX tower was taken to an electroplating business near
Fredricksburg, VA a number of years ago. A friend of mine who lived in
Fairfax, Va wanted the tower sections put in the acid bath before the
galvanizing process to remove the rust, etc. After the sections were
supposedly tanked, they did fall apart as they rivets fell apart. He had
the sections galvanized and later re-assembled them with nuts and bolts. It
was a bit tedious but appeared to work fine and may still be up now. This
was 10-12 years ago. Good luck... - Mike

That might not be just a story.....
A local friend of mine had a tower re-galvanized and the rivets corroded.
In investigating this he discovered that the rivets are aluminum.
Not really believing him I checked my rivets with a magnet.....uhhh, guess
what?

What type of freestanding tower is it? I seem to remember a story about a
ham who sent an HBX tower to the galvanizer and when it hit the tank the
rivets all melted. Maybe just a good story, but something to think about.

I'm cleaning up an old 65' freestanding tower and would like to get the
thing galvanized. I live in central Ohio and have looked up a few places
that advertise the service but haven't called any of them yet. What price
range should I be looking at and how clean does this have to be before they
can process it? Anyone have one to recommend in Ohio that they have used?
I was putting off calling until I had some sort of idea of what was a good
price and what was a rip-off.
Thanks!
Bob-
