I meant to say steel weighs 0.283 pounds / cubic inch.

BTW,  a solid mast is not much stronger than heavy wall tubing but a lot 
heavier.

The weight of steel is approximately 0.283 pounds / sq inch.   So 12" of 3"
round weighs:   pi * 1.5(sq) * 12 * .283 =  24 pounds
