And the shock pack is to keep you from getting killed, not necessarily 
unhurt.
Even if the straps are almost tight to the pack you can still chin 
yourself on a cross brace 3 or 4 times before coming to a stop, but you 
have to leave enough slack to move around which is additional distance.
