Back in the "Early Days", there was fishing line made of Braided Dacron.
Used it for Tuna Fishing. I think it is still used.

Another option is clothes line.

You can get it at most hardware stores. Its available in vinyl covered
steel. It is small diameter and very strong.

It has supported a 5 band vertical for several years without noticeable
deterioration.
It also works well for the unlock lever on a Hazor.
