Steve:

What are you standing on when you perform this process?  Are you on a
ladder, a man lift, or standing on the tower sections? 

I have never found that 2x4s or steel pipes truly block a crank up tower.
Sure you can jam 2x4s through the tower sections, and/or pipe section
through the telescoping sections, but it is clear that if the lift cable
sheared, the tower sections would drop significant amounts (enough to shear
off toes or fingers) before the blocks kick in. 

I really am interested since I currently own a pair of HDX589s

I've done as Steve suggested several times during the few years that I owned
a crank-up tower.  Changing a rotator this way is pretty easy and safe if
you block the tower sections.

Hiya, Brian --
 
    You don't need to remove the antennas and  mast. Run the tower up far 
enough so that the rotator is accessible, block the  bottom of sections with

2x4's or pipes to prevent downward tower  movement and go on up. You can use

a comealong to lift the mast up enough  to clear the rotator or a pry bar 
of some sort. You can get the mast up enough  to do the swap and then it's 
pretty straightforward.
