Actually, all pipe of the same nominal size (e.g. 1") has the same OD, 
which is almost never the nominal size (1" pipe is 1.315")

(think about plastic pipe, which has to slip fit into the same 
fittings.. there's no such thing as a Sch 80 elbow)(iron pipe is 
threaded and has to fit into standard threads..)
google for any pipe dimension table..

As you mentioned, the schedule tells you the (nominal) wall thickness. 
But in any case, OD is the controlled dimension.
