Actually, there are sch 40 fittings such as elbows that are
distinct from sch 80 fittings.  The schedule 80 fittings are
gray in color and have a thicker wall.  However, the ID of the
fittings is the same just as the OD of the pipes in the same.

It is true that fittings are freely interchangeable
between schedules.  Either schedule pipe will fit either schedule
fitting.  This allows you to connect a sch 80 pipe to a sch 40
pipe without a special 40/80 adapter.
