It's just a sand blaster with a smaller nozzle.  Many better quality 
blasters have various size nozzles available.
OTOH soda will remove galvanizing if left on one spot too long or if the 
air pressure is too high.

You can also replace the sand with small glass beads (bead blaster) 
which works quite well.
