For a splice I'd install a male connector on one piece and a female on 
the other.  You get them them in most types such as N, UHF, and I 
believe 7-16.  IOW two connectors instead of three which with hard line 
can save a few dollars.
That is the route I've taken with LMR-600.

Just remember that most RTV is not moisture proof. Water proof? Yes, but 
not moisture proof.  Even the stuff theuse to make aquariums is not 
moisture proof.
