Like other materials that cure on contact with air, or dry out, just put 
the whole can in a sealable plastic container.  This is easier to do 
with quart containers than gallons. OTOH if you have a cat or cats, 
those big plastic litter containers just might be the ticket for gallon 
paint cans.  I've never tried one so I have no idea as to how well 
they'd work.
Use of container just large enough to hold the paint container.

Cans will hold their ability to seal for quite some time if the rim, 
groove, and top are carefully cleaned before resealing.  ANY paint on 
the sealing edge that is allowed to dry (or cure) will degrade the cans 
ability to properly reseal.  It's messy and work to get that edge 
properly cleaned which is why I go with the plastic containers like 
Tupperware and your wife's collection may have a couple just the right 
size that she "Might" never  miss, but don't stake your earthly 
possessions  on her having a bad memory.<:-))

Being some what lazy (and messy) and also hating to paint, I have an 
HVLP paint sprayer which wastes very little paint, but it uses a LOT of 
air. A small compressor can't keep up.  IT's also a PITA to clean but 
comes apart easily and.  I also have an 80 gallon compressor out in the 
shop.
