"Everyone is missing the easiest way. Put up the plastic owl, and rotate it slowly every day till the pigeons no longer roost, and THAT is true north"

Myself, to find "true North", I just look at the street in front of the house, which runs pretty much N/S and try to get the boom more ore less parallel . Close enough for a small HF tri-bander.
