It wouldn't work on the tower, or certainly would be awkward, but when 
cutting large pieces of Cr Mo, why not use a plasma torch? When a torch 
of adequate size is used properly, heating is localized and confined to 
a shallow depth with much of the heat carried off by the high velocity air.

I have cut painted "barn metal" without scorching the paint.  OTOH when 
cutting near the limits of the torch (IE:  near 3/4" with a torch rated 
at a max of 3/4" the heat can spread much like an Oxy Acetylene cutting 
torch.)   With a steady hand, or fixture, the plasma torch can make a 
relatively smooth cut.  It heats a small area to a very high temp for a 
short time.  We used to use a variable speed DC motor to turn pipe of 
various sizes for cutting and welding.
