[TowerTalk] antenna choices for K4XS

You are right Jeff....all the bashing that has been going on lately about
Mosley Antennas fits in well right here. My retired friend who is on a
budget, bought a used Mosley TA53 ( I think that is the correct model). We
also found the 'matching' rotatable dipole for it a few weeks after he
bought the used yagi. Now he has an antenna with 6/10/12/15/17/20/40. He
bought some new trap caps and plastic or Delrin parts for the driven element
which were cracked and I put it up on a 70ft motorized crankup for him. He
has been having a ball with it...worked the ZL7E several times just today.
..can't be all bad. It's not a Steppir or ____________ (place the name of
your favorite antenna here) but he's working what he can hear and (like I
said) that can't be all bad. By the way, the Mosley is pretty rugged...I
read a little while ago that someone had some element tips falling off a
TH7. That won't happen with a Mosley. Something ELSE might go, but they use
good aluminum. That TH7 must be a new or newer one. I had one up for 9
years when I lived in Manassas, VA back in the '90s that worked like
gangbusters up to the last day it was up. But that was when HyGain was
making them no doubt and not MFJ.

Gear choices are a complete joke when talking about being active over a span
of 50+ years - as a lot of the top honor role guys have been.

Sure, some gear is better than others (antenna X is 2 db better than antenna
Y) and in a shoot-out, the better beam will give the better signal by a bit.
But that's a pretty small delta compared to solar conditions. I wonder what
the SFI difference needs to be to provide an equivalent 2db better SNR to
signals on the bands? I bet it's not very much.

The fact is being on the bands when the condx are right - even if you don't
have 20 elements at 200' - can get you in the log most of the time. 10m is
a great example of that. When the SFI is sizzling (e.g 90's peak), a whip
on the balcony with the railing as the ground system let's you work the
world. For the high bands, when the cycle is down, all the antenna
horsepower in the world won't burn a hole through to let you work the DX.

K7LXC and N0AX published two widely respected *scientific* studies
of tribander performance using validated measurement techniques to
directly compare the performance of the tested antennas against a
standard (dipole). These were field tests not some modelling exercise
that failes to capture real world losses in the antenna design.

In those tests, the Mosley antennas TA-33, PRO-57B and PRO-77 were
the *worst* performers in their respective (small and large tribader)
categories. The TA33 averaged less than 1 dB gain compared to a dipole
on 20 meters and less than 1.5 dB gain compared to a dipole on 10
meters. The PRO57B and PRO77 both averaged less than 1 dB gain
compared to a dipole on 20 meters and more than 1 dB *LESS* gain
compared to a dipole on 10 meters.

The small tribander group typically showed 3 dB on 20 meters and 4 dB
on 10 meters vs. a dipole while the large tribander group typically
showed 4+ dB on 20 meters and 5 - 6 dB on 10 meters.

Enjoy your Mosely ... I'm also on the DXCC Honor Roll (CW and Mixed)
and my only antennas are a 20-10 meter dipole at 20 feet, an R5
(vertical) with base at 20 feet, and a 160-40 meter trapped inverted V
with apex at 40 feet. As has been said many times - anything that
radiates will make QSOs.
