Thank you for the advice.  

I don't know when I'll get to this with my busy retirement schedule (seriously :-)) but I will be sure to make record of the impedance at the base of each of these verticals with the current set up and then see what they look like after the change is made.  

The 80m verticals' bases are fairly small (guessing about 16 inches square) with about 8 inches of 25G above the concrete pad and then G10 rod insulating that from the rest of the 25G.  It will be interesting to see if I can make a notable change in the resonant frequency on the first one.
