Another option is to buy a 1/2-in socket adapter - see Figure 3 of this
article:
http://www.ifwtech.co.uk/g3sek/in-prac/0710.pdf    Snap on a socket to
fit whichever size of rod you're driving.

The article also shows how to use the 'hammer + rotary' function to
drill 1 metre deep pilot holes for earth rods in rocky ground.
